Quick answers
Questions people ask most
The short version of what Australians search for before starting therapy. Each answer links to the full guide.
How many psychology sessions does Medicare cover?
Up to 10 individual sessions each calendar year under Better Access, plus up to 10 group sessions. You need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a referral from your usual GP or MyMedicare practice. At MeHelp, these sessions are bulk billed. Read the guide: How Medicare works for psychology
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
Only to claim a Medicare rebate. You can book a MeHelp psychologist privately for $180 a session with no referral at all. Read the guide: Medicare, private health or paying privately
Is bulk-billed psychology really free?
Yes. When a psychologist bulk bills, they accept the Medicare rebate as the full fee and you pay nothing. MeHelp bulk bills eligible clients with a valid plan and referral. Read the guide: How bulk billing works
Can I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan from an online GP?
Since November 2025, Medicare only rebates sessions if the plan comes from your usual GP or MyMedicare practice. A one-off online GP generally won't qualify. Read the guide: Getting a Mental Health Treatment Plan
What happens when my 10 Medicare sessions run out?
You can keep seeing your MeHelp psychologist privately for $180 a session, claim on private health extras, or use an employer EAP until your sessions reset on 1 January. Read the guide: When your Medicare sessions run out
Will my employer know if I use the EAP?
Not from the provider. Employers usually receive de-identified usage numbers only, not names or what was discussed. Read the guide: What is an EAP, and how do I use it?
Can I claim WorkCover for a psychological injury?
Often, yes, if work was the main cause. You'll need a certificate of capacity from a doctor. MeHelp provides WorkCover psychology in every state and bills the insurer directly. Read the guide: WorkCover and psychological injury
Does Medicare cover couples counselling?
No. Medicare doesn't fund joint couples therapy, although a partner can join up to 2 of your individual sessions. Read the guide: Couples therapy and Medicare

At MeHelp, an ADHD assessment is $1,750, including the initial consultation, assessment sessions, written report and feedback session. It's done by telehealth, Australia-wide. Read the guide: ADHD and autism assessments with MeHelp
Is online therapy as effective as face to face?
For many common concerns, research has found video therapy comparable to in-person therapy, and Medicare pays the same rebate. Read the guide: How online therapy works
