How to Refer to MeHelp Psychology

Medicare Changes — Effective 1 November 2025

Recent updates to the Medicare Better Access program link mental health care plans directly to a patient’s MyMedicare-registered GP practice or their usual GP.Here’s what this means for you and your patients:

1. Link Between MyMedicare and MHTPs

  • From 1 November 2025, MHTPs will only attract a Medicare rebate when prepared by a patient’s MyMedicare-registered or usual GP.
  • This change aims to strengthen continuity of care, ensuring patients receive support from a familiar GP team.
  • If a patient has not registered with MyMedicare, the rebate still applies if the referring GP is recognised as their usual practitioner (i.e. has seen them face-to-face in the past 12 months).

2. Tracking and Continuity

  • The MyMedicare app and portal now let patients and providers track:
    -How many Better Access sessions have been used (10 individual + 10 group sessions per calendar year).
    -Which GP prepared the plan, and when reviews are due.
  • Patients can update their MyMedicare registration if they move or change GPs.

3. Eligibility and Access

  • MHTPs do not expire — they remain valid until sessions are completed or a new plan is prepared.
  • Referrals made before 1 November 2025 remain valid until all sessions are used.
  • To claim the rebate, the patient must have seen their usual or MyMedicare GP in person within the last 12 months.
  • Exemptions apply for people experiencing homelessness or living in disaster-declared regions.

Named referrals (where a GP refers directly to a specific psychologist or provider) remain valid and are accepted at MeHelp Psychology.

The Process

How to Refer a Patient

Create a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).
Include the following documents:

1) Referral letter (addressed to MeHelp Psychology or a specific psychologist, if preferred).

2)Copy of the referral letter and MHTP - please ensure this is signed.

Once received, our clinical admin team will reach out to your patient to:

-Match them with the most suitable psychologist.
-Arrange their first appointment.
-Confirm you’ve been listed as the referring GP for continuity of care.

What Happens Next?

After your referral:

Patients are contacted within 1–2 business days.
They are carefully matched to a psychologist based on their needs, preferences, and availability.
Our team handles all scheduling and reminders to reduce non-attendance rates.
You’ll receive updates once sessions are underway or when review points are due.
