Pricing & Medicare

How much does an online psychologist cost in Australia?

In Australia, there are two main cost paths for seeing an online psychologist. With a GP Mental Health Care Plan and a signed referral, your sessions with MeHelp are bulk billed — $0 out-of-pocket through Medicare. Without a referral, sessions are $180 each, no GP visit needed and no session limit. Same psychologists, same quality of care, either way.

    Two cost paths

How much does an online psychologist cost with or without a Medicare referral?

Both paths give you the same AHPRA-registered psychologists and the same online sessions. The difference is whether Medicare is covering the cost.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan (sometimes called a Mental Health Treatment Plan, or MHCP/MHTP) is a short document your GP prepares after a consultation about how you're going. It sets out goals for your treatment and, together with a signed referral, unlocks Medicare-supported sessions with a registered psychologist — up to 10 in a calendar year.

You bring your Mental Health Care Plan and referral to MeHelp, and from there your sessions are bulk billed.

    Eligibility

Is a free psychologist available through Medicare?

Bulk-billed sessions mean $0 out-of-pocket for eligible clients — Medicare pays the rebate directly to MeHelp. It isn't unconditionally "free" for everyone, though. Whether Medicare covers your session depends on your circumstances.

To be bulk billed, you'll need

    • A valid Medicare card
    • A Mental Health Care Plan prepared by your GP
    • A signed referral from your GP to a psychologist
    • To be within Medicare's 10-session yearly cap for individual sessions

    Common questions about cost.

With MeHelp, private sessions are $180 per session with no GP referral needed. There is no session cap and you don't need a Mental Health Care Plan — you can book directly and, when a psychologist has availability, often start the same week.

    Whichever path suits you.
